New York's bright lights, great shopping, banging nightlife and all round exciting personality has put this city on the map like no other.  This article will show you where to stay in New York City and how to get the best deals on New York short breaks. Not all travel websites are created equal so we will share the ones we have personally tried and tested. A visit to the Big Apple is likely to be one of the most thrilling trips of your life.  So, whether it is for a few days or longer, it is important that you find somewhere decent to stay. So, let's get to it:

Where to stay in New York City

It is a massive place with so many different areas so deciding where to stay in New York city can be a bit overwhelming. If you want to be in the heart of the action, the shopping, the theatre, the main attractions then stay in Manhattan.  It is central, it is busy and for travelling around it is the best location especially if you on one of those short breaks to New York.

Some parts of the city are not ideal so while you might be after a cheap deal to NYC it is pretty important to choose a good quality hotel. This does not always mean the most expensive but with some of the lower priced accommodation you really do get what you pay for. However, because it is such a popular destination there are a lot of great value hotels around.

Here's a few that come highly recommended by other travellers:

The Yotel, New York at Times Square is in the midtown area of the city with fabulous views of the iconic buildings and the stunning sunsets. Although, the name suggests that it is on Times Square, it is not. However it is only a couple of blocks away and is within walking distance of the shops, the theatres and the nightlife. When it opened in 2011, it aimed to provide guests with affordable luxury. As such the rooms aren't huge but they are comfortable and the muffins and coffee for breakfast are definitely a bonus. With views of the Empire State building and free continental breakfast it is excellent value for money. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and most of the main attractions are just a short stroll away. Penn station isn't far either so you can get around the city easily on the subway.

Where to avoid staying in New York

The hostels and uber cheap B&Bs might seem like a cheap way to see New York but unfortunately some of them can attract some dodgy characters. Like any city, New York has two sides to it so stay safe and if you do go for a really cheap place, make sure you do some research before you book. There's no point ending up in hell hole just to save a few quid.  Google is your friend.  The hotels above are tried and tested.  Click on their names for more details or to book either of these hotels.  You can stay outside Manhattan in places like New Jersey and Brooklyn but these places are a train ride away from the action.  The trains do run all night but if you are only staying for a few days, it makes sense to be in Manhattan.
