A guide toAlgarve Family holidays

Its golden beaches, mild weather and delicious Mediterranean cuisine is what attract legions of visitors to  Portugal every year.  If you haven't been before you might wonder which resort is best for Algarve family holidays. To save you time we have put together this short guide to help you find a family holiday resort that suits you.

If you like resorts with a village feel then you will love Alvor. It has a lovely harbour where fishermen deliver their daily catch to the local restaurants and a long sandy beach which is perfect for sand castle building. It even has its own lagoon and river. It is one of the most charming resorts in the Algarve and the warm waters are ideal for water babies of all ages.

There are a few lovely hotels on this side of the Algarve:

The five star Pestana Alvor Park Hotel  offers great value for money. It is minutes from the beach and all the luxurious apartments have air conditioning, an equipped kitchen and even a washing machine. There are a selection of pools both inside and out. For smaller children, there is a paddling pool and for when you want to kick back and relax there is a jacuzzi, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a steam room. The views are best at the top of the hotel but all rooms have a great view. It is also close to the local restaurants or you can eat at their lovely in house restaurant if you would prefer.  For a little bit of luxury, it is just the ticket. Prices start at just £14 per night and kids go free if you book with On The Beach.

If you are after a budget break at a beautiful low-rise hotel in Alvor then Clube Alvorferias will be right up your street. The three star, white washed accommodation is set in lush palm lined grounds and is just 900m from the golden beach. It has a stunning swimming pool area with a smaller pool for young children, a tennis court and a playground. All rooms are air conditioned and there are shops onsite.

Albufeira is also a popular resort for Algarve family holidays. It was once a fishing village but it now one of the most popular holiday destinations in Portugal. Albufeira has a long sandy beach and the marina offers boat trips around the Algarve where you can go dolphin watching or diving. It is a city now so is much busier than Alvor but there is plenty to do for all ages. There are lots of hotels across the resort but these are our top picks:

The five star Epic Sana Hotel certainly lives up to its name.  Set in stunning grounds with gorgeous gardens and sea views, this modern hotel brings together luxury and natural beauty. The terraces are the perfect place for cocktails and there are 5 swimming pools including a baby pool and two family pools. If you want to really unwind there is an onsite spa and a hotel-run kids' club for children aged 4-12 so no need to worry about the little ones being bored. The kids club has two club houses where children can play with toys and computer games. There is also an indoor playground and sports facilities so you can rest assured they will be well looked after. Praia da Falésia beach is a short stroll away and the food is second to none. No wonder it has won an award. You can book this hotel with Love Holidays from £508 per person including flight with a £79 deposit per person.  Click the palm tree above for availability.

The three star Clube Oceano is great for those looking for an Algarve family holiday on a budget.  Forte de Sío Joío beach is just round the corner, there is air conditioning in all rooms and it is only a short walk from the old town. There is a paddling pool for the kids and a larger pool for stronger swimmers and adults.  There is a snack bar onsite and restaurants are just a short stroll away. Best of all this lovely hotel can be booked from only £10 per night.
